The Alberta government will make it illegal to sue people who use violence to protect their property, as long as the property owner does not commit a criminal act in the process.

The amendments to the Occupiers’ Liability Act will be retroactive, starting Jan. 1, 2018, and could effectively end a lawsuit against an Okotoks man who shot an intruder on his farm last year.

It's so often said...it's all about the money, and the major reason so many despise lawyers.
All too many of them use whatever means available to get someone off the hook for crimes
that they have been a party too even though that person is admittedly guilty, seemingly without
any conscious because it's all for the money.

""as long as the property owner does not commit a criminal act""

I'm afraid many property owners will still find themselves embroiled in our faulty legal system...the police lay the charge it's up to the crown or court to determine if a criminal act has been committed.
